Jakarta, Indonesia, October 23-24, 2014
At the end October 2014, the very dynamic team from Indonesia, Jakarta, organized in collaboration with ISPAD, a postgraduate course on childhood diabetes in Jakarta.
Just before the meeting a visit to the new Pediatric Clinic was combined with case presentation and discussion and meeting with some of the children.
During the meeting, national and international faculty gave lectures on the most important topics for the care of children with diabetes. Among the lecturers were previous ISPAD science school fellows, clearly showing their passion and active involvement! Interesting discussions between faculty and participants took place around theoretical and real case histories.
The exchanges among teams and during the plenary sessions, together with practical skill training proved to be most useful for most participants. This course was limited to 40 participants including physicians as well as healthcare professionals.
Hopefully these Diabetes in Practice courses will continue, to allow a larger number of professionals to participate. The fact that the start of a registry has led to a more than tenfold increase in the number of children identified with this disease (now > 1000), suggests that the incidence may be far higher than expected. Increasing awareness and access to care and education has clearly started and will hopefully continue in the same positive approach as the meeting!
A warm thanks to the organizers on behalf of ISPAD!
